Harley SwiftDeer Reagan - In Memoriam
Harley SwiftDeer Reagan - crossed over on September 10, 2013

Our much-loved nagual and teacher,

Harley SwiftDeer Reagan,
also known to many as Gunnie,

returned to the Great Round
the evening of September 10, 2013.

Remembering Harley SwiftDeer Reagan

From his family in Phoenix:

6:45pm on Sept 10, 2013 marks the passing of a special man, an extraordinary teacher, a beloved husband, a decorated warrior, a world champion martial artist, a shooting buddy, and … a good friend.

His walk on Grandmother Earth made a difference by touching the hearts of those he met. The knowledge and wisdom he shared helped tens of thousands of people to heal and grow.

He took a stand for individual liberty and freedom that inspired those he met to defend the "right to keep and bear arms” as a way to become a self-responsible human on Grandmother Earth who walks in Beauty.

His presence will be deeply missed, but our hearts soar for the honor to have known him.

A warrior returns home.

On this page, we begin to collect images and remembrances of him in all his beauty, power, strength, sweetness, contrariness, humor, intelligence, and complexity.

About Harley SwiftDeer Reagan's Life

Harley SwiftDeer Reagan, co-founder of DTMMSHarley SwiftDeer Reagan led a very full and adventuresome life. He served in Vietnam and, in 1994, he was inducted into the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame in honor of his contribution within that field. He also pursued studies in psychology, philosophy and religion. All of this rich experience and study is integrated into SwiftDeer's style and content of how he carries the Sweet Medicine SunDance Wheels and Keys.

In July of 1992, SwiftDeer was seated and sealed as a Twisted Hairs elder on the Council. His primary responsibility is to introduce whatever teachings the Council deems necessary for people to wake up and step into sobriety.

The Deer Tribe Metis Medicine Society (DTMMS) was founded in 1986 by Harley SwiftDeer Reagan for the purpose of gathering, translating and teaching the Wheels and Keys of the Sweet Medicine SunDance (SMSD) Path of Turtle Island. Mandated and guided by the Twisted Hairs Metis Medicine Society Council of Elders, the Deer Tribe also provides training and guidance for apprentices working the "gateway" process of personal growth and spiritual awakening in this Path.

His Many Faces

Harley SwiftDeer Reagan - teacher, nagual, martial artist, shootist, nagual, cowboy, manBorn and raised in Texas, SwiftDeer often referred to himself as a half-breed cowboy. And though true, that was only a small part of the truth.

Anyone who has been in the dojo with SwiftDeer can attest to his skill in martial arts. He brought an intensity of focus, attention to detail, and knowledge of what really matters in technique and situations.

He delighted in the competitiveness of the shooting world. The Deer Tribe Gun Club, which he founded, has been running monthly Steel Challenge matches for at least 13 years. He said this about his experience: "… The stress of being the Chief Range Master/Match Sponsor & also shoot your own match! ( I LOVE IT!)". In the world of Cowboy Action Shooting he was known as "Ol’ Swift Buck.”

He has touched the lives of many, many people around the world with the teachings he brought through the Twisted Hairs Council of Elders: the wheels, keys, and ceremonies of the Sweet Medicine SunDance Path.

He was also a beloved husband, father, son, godfather, friend.

Though we will miss you more than words can say, we are at the same time full of gratitude for the time we had with you, and we send our prayers for your transition to - whatever is next for you!
